When is it more advantageous to repair a system and when does it just make sense to replace it?
This is the question we deal with more than any other with the possible exception of “ How much will it cost?” The answer is not as difficult or scary as you may think. When a system has reached the end of its efficient life (when the cost of repairing is greater than the fuel saving and added comfort realized by a new system), any money spent on repairs would be foolish.
When is the end of a system’s “efficient life”?
Typically this takes place in about the tenth to twelfth year. At that time, new systems with increased efficiency have been introduced and the original efficiency of current system has diminished. For example, if you purchased an air conditioning system in 1990 with a S.E.E.R. rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) of 6 to 8, that system would be only 55% or 60% efficient today due to age and wear. If replaced by a new Comfortmaker 12 or 14 S.E.E.R. system, the energy saving alone would pay for the new furnace and air conditioner in a relatively short time. However, if you have a newer furnace and air conditioner and the replacement would not be paid for by energy savings, by all means make the repair. There is nothing wrong with repairing and maintaining a system as long as it has not outlived its efficiency.
